  This Week in Richmond gives Southwest Virginians an in-depth look at important developments and decisions coming out of the capitol. From budget cuts to regulatory affairs, the program spotlights the latest happenings at the General Assembly. It provides timely insights and behind-the-headlines analysis of the most recent news about taxes, education and other matters that are critical to people in our region.

  State capitol veteran, David Bailey, is the host of the show. Bailey captures first-hand perspectives of state legislators and other voices from the Capitol, especially those who represent Southwest Virginia communities. He also presents viewers with unique analysis and thoughtful perspective on important issues of regional interest.

  The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, winds over 300 miles through the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Connecting major music venues, music jams, and festivals in communities all along the way, The Crooked Road helps share and preserve the history of American music.   As the region’s story teller, Blue Ridge PBS presents On the Crooked Road to capture the flavor of what this unique trail offers our region’s residents and visitors.

   A series that brings experts around the table to discuss educational issues for our viewers while developing a community of learners that are informed and ready to take action to help our local students reach their full potential.

  • What it Takes… to Teach
    Is our education system stalled or even failing? University leaders discuss how colleges know who will make a great teacher and how teachers learn how to teach. They explore key skills for student teachers and the tools needed to work in America’s ever changing classrooms. The panel discusses recommendations for turning teacher education programs “upside down”.
     
  • What it Takes… to Graduate 
    When students learn more, they earn more. School and business leaders discuss the economic and social impact of high school drop-outs; why they’re leaving; successful interventions; and offer community solutions to solve the problem. The panel breaks down the different paths to graduation, strategies for success and what each of us can do to help.
    
    
  • What it Takes... to End Bullying
    Sticks and stones and names can hurt you. Bullying begins in pre-school, with half of all bullying going unreported to school officials or parents. Today, one in five students in an average classroom experiences bullying, and 160,000 children miss school every day, often feeling powerless. In this episode, a diverse panel of experts discusses this serious problem, the legal implications, cyber bullying and the long term impact for students. You’ll hear specific suggestions and tips for students, schools, parents and communities. Panelists are Darby Lowe, Deputy Commonwealth Attorney for Albemarle County; Kathy Kenley, Prevention Services Supervisor, New River Valley Community Services; and Catherine Moffett, Ed.D., Director of Bully-Free Virginia.

• Positive Parenting

  Special program developed with Smart Beginnings of Greater Roanoke Statistics show that one in five Virginia children arrives in kindergarten without the basic skills to succeed. "At Blue Ridge PBS, we understand that today's children are tomorrow's citizens who will contribute to our economy and strengthen our communities," said Julie Newman, Blue Ridge PBS Executive Producer and host of "Positive Parenting." "We developed this program for anyone who cares for or works with young children."

  "Positive Parenting" will help children in the region enter kindergarten ready to succeed in school and in life. This is a goal of Smart Beginnings of Greater Roanoke, a Roanoke area collaborative established to improve early childhood services. As a Smart Beginnings partner, Blue Ridge PBS has created an educational program that features interviews with local experts in the infant and child care field. "Positive Parenting" will also take viewers inside popular local child care and pre-school programs. The program is organized into six areas of interest: family life, health and safety, infants and toddlers, pre-schoolers, community resources and corporate support.

  "Smart Beginnings is very pleased to be able to partner with Blue Ridge PBS on this project," said Danielle Murray, Program Manager for Smart Beginnings of Greater Roanoke. "The mission of Smart Beginnings is to inform parents, providers and the community on how to ensure that our children are ready to be successful, both in school and in their community. We feel that this program will help highlight how important early childhood is, not only for school success but for the success of our economy and future workforce."

• On The Road

  

  "On the Road" is a collection of stories from across the region, broadcast at various times throughout each day. The stories, each just a few minutes long, highlight local personalities, businesses, organizations and events, all interesting subjects and cultural treasures from our own communities.

  "We are the region's story teller and community square," said James Baum, Blue Ridge PBS President and CEO. "With "On the Road," we will share stories about our local history, arts and culture-stories that truly make this region special."

  By airing "On the Road" stories multiple times on a daily basis, Blue Ridge PBS is able to add significant local content to its programming schedule. It also helps the featured subjects, giving them a voice and reach that magnifies their effectiveness.
