Hello, I’m April Small. I am so excited to be teaching literacy skills on the new SW VA TV Classroom. I currently reside in Roanoke, VA with my husband, Chris. We have four daughters, Elizabeth (16), Autumn (11), Juliet (9) and Hadley (2). I have been an educator in both Ohio and Virginia for the last 15 years and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else. I realized I wanted to be a teacher in my late college years. In preparation for this, I went back and got an M. Ed. in elementary education from Liberty University. My love of learning and all things reading, prompted me to continue my education and earn an Education Specialist degree with a reading endorsement from LU a few years later. I then went on to earn my Doctor of Education degree in 2019, also from LU. Currently, I am a Title I Reading Specialist serving students at Preston Park Elementary in Roanoke City. I also serve as an adjunct professor for the Liberty University Graduate School of Education.
Teaching literacy skills and helping striving readers discover their love of reading is my passion. Through the episodes on SW VA TV Classroom, I hope to help our young viewers stay immersed in literature and gain a deeper understanding of the VA Standards of Learning. While the episodes will be geared towards teaching the 4th and 5th grade SOLs, I truly feel that all elementary level students will be able to gain something from them. I can’t wait for you to join me on this new adventure!
